My plan for these posts

So I decided to move to making posts every time I have something I actually want to talk about rather than the random jokes and thoughts I would flood my page with. The issue with the old system was that I would have a great idea and then by the time I got home and turned my PC on I had forgotten it. And before you say anything, no the ideas were not good enough to write a reminder on my phone...

My aim with the new system is to pick a topic (or multiple) and talk about it for a little while. This way my thoughts will be more cohesive to people arriving on my page for the first time and more simple to navigate through as each one takes you to a new page dedicated to that post.

I have no set time schedule that I will put these out so it will just be whenever the inspiration hits me or when I can be bothered lol. I find I go through phases of wanting to work on my site, like right now I was thinking about working on my site all day while I was out but before today I went weeks without a meaningful update or change so lets hope this wave of motivation can carry on!

A quote I've been using soooo much lately (and people that know me will be sick of hearing) is "Eat your biggest frog first" meaning when you have some tasks to do just get on with it and do the worst one first. The two outcomes from this are either it was easier than you were expecting and now the smaller tasks (frogs) will be super easy or alternatively it was tough but now that you've got the bad one out of the way all the others will seem easy by comparison. Treating my work like a giant frog has really been helping me avoid the temptation of watching reels all day at work so I am hoping treating my site like a frog will have the same affect and motivate me to add some content.

As for the old content on the side, I'll probably dump it somewhere just for archival purposes just because I did have that one good joke about Kill Bill that the people deserve to be able to read.

My game idea

Recently I had a brilliant idea for a game but, rather ironically given the paragraph above this, I can't be bothered to work on it yet so I'm just going to make a note of the idea here to remind myself for when I am feeling like I can actually make it some other time lol.

I think my issue with making a game is I'll have a superb idea, install GameMaker 2 and then I'll get scared by the millions of buttons and I'll think "maybe I need to come back to this" and then I never do. So I'm hoping one day I'll actually commit to learning it and I can make this idea.

So I'm a little worried my idea will sound like mad ramblings because really it's just a reminder for me to come back to later but I'll try make it as cohesive as possible haha. Anyway if someone reading this steals my idea because it's so good then please put me at the bottom of the credits or at least in an easter egg or something!

Anyway the first idea I had was for the gameplay. The combat will be turn based and take place on a large grid. Still not sure on the dimensions of this yet but lets say 8x8. You'll have 4 characters to control and based on what weapon each of them are using dictates what squares they are able to attack. Think of it like the knight in chess only being able to attack 2 in front and one to the side for example. So each character will have a set square around them they can attack but they will also have a stamina stat which dictates how many squares they can move that turn. This is so the player can move the characters into positions where they will be able to attack.

So as well as a weapon and a stamina stat each character will also have a health stat which dictates how much damage they can take from the weapon they are hit by. A players turn ends when they have used all the actions on all of their characters or chosen to end their turn early. Then the CPU enemies will have their turn moving by the same rules. I could've saved a lot of time by just saying it's like top down XCOM with chess movement lol.

I also like the idea of having a speed stat which determines each characters turn order. Maybe this could be decided by the gear they chose to equip so making a build is a matter of finding the perfect balance between health, speed and stamina. Other stats could be added to make build crafting more of a thing like evasiveness, crit chance and crit damage but maybe I should get the basics sorted first before my scope gets too big to do everything with my limited skillset.

As for the theme and setting of the game, I absolutely love the idea of working on some kind of coming of age vibes as I think you can create some incredible characters and storylines within a world like that. Looking at something like 'Night in the woods' where it's very low stakes compared to an average game but each character has something they deeply care about and the player relates to that more than a game where you're blowing stuff up for example. I think maybe the weapons and gear could all be stuff from the imagination of children so they fight with sticks and things.

As for the art style I am by no means an artist so I often struggle here. I think the idea of a hand drawn, sort of purposefully rough around the edges style could be very cool to match the world I would like it to be set in. That being said, a classic 8 bit style is 'easy' to implement and can be made to work with anything. No offence to anyone who makes 8 bit artwork, I only say easy because there's less room to work with so in my mind that's less room for me to make errors!

Anyway a very limited idea so far but I thought the gameplay definitely had some potential and I didn't want to forget it so I've written it here. Someone remind me to make this a few years please. Until then I'll keep thinking about what story I want to tell with this and maybe I'll update with further details.
